Testimonial
From a Homeowner …
I deem it an honor to write this letter on behalf of the Home Works Program. Any opportunity that presents itself for me to testify of this more than worthy program, I will take advantage of it.
The Home Works program did more for me than just repair my home, they repaired my spirit as well. And in doing so, I have found and formed more friendships and acquired, I believe, a lasting bond with them.
My home was in a sad state of repair inside and out. This did nothing for my attitude or self-esteem because I beat myself up every time I approached my house and moved about inside. I was unable to do anything about the repairs and they were getting steadily worse. I was ashamed to move about in the neighborhood because I felt the neighbors were talking about my property. My children were asking for certain things to be done or why don't I do certain things and my answer always was, I don't have the money. Their response was always the same, "why don't you get the money?" They didn't understand that even though I am gainfully employed, the cost of repairs far exceeded my savings. I would get upset if someone wanted to visit me. I felt I had to start explaining why my house looked the way it did. Borrowing the money was out, because I knew with my salary, I would not be able to repay the loan if I was approved for one. Besides, I would not have gotten from a hired contractor what Home Works gave me.
This group came out and unselfishly gave of themselves, their time, and their hearts, and did major repairs to my home. Their repairs included, but aren't limited to the following: roof repairs, replaced rotten woodwork, installed new front door, painted inside and out, installed plumbing, new kitchen floor, new kitchen cabinets and sink, new light fixtures, placed linoleum on floor, new hot water heater, relocated gas line and moved kitchen appliances to give me more space in my kitchen and much, much more.
All of this was done with a labor of love, asking nothing of me, but being rewarded with the fact that they were able to help someone in genuine need. My spirits have soared, and I now take pride in my home, inside and out. I am no longer ashamed to move about in my neighborhood, because my home stands up to any others now. My children's spirits are better, they have begun to keep the house cleaner, which was a major task in the past. I could go on and on about the tangibility, as well as the spiritual things that Home Works has done for me.
I know of few programs like this, and especially the people that are involved. The committment is overwhelming. I now live in a house that I fondly like to say, that the hands of love made, and I feel that love as I look at and move through my new home.
The program is very worthy of anything that can be given to them. I am a very satisfied person. Their ministry goes beyond just the physical repair, but touches the spirit of those it is involved with.
Sincerely,
Betty J. Bickley
